Sheriff William Gore announced at a press briefing just moments ago that human remains have been discovered during the extensive search for missing teenager Chelsea King.
“It’s with great sadness this afternoon that we discovered shortly after one o’clock human remains near the waters edge in a shallow grave within the area of which our search efforts have been concentrated. Although positive identification has not been made there is strong likelihood that we have found Chelsea,” Sheriff Gore said in a prepared statement. “I have just left the home of Brent and Kelly King, where I shared this information. Obviously they are devastated and I ask that you respect their privacy during this extremely difficult time.”- Sheriff Gore
Sheriff Gore further detailed that a dive team member of the search party discovered the remains located in a shallow grave near the waters edge approximately 10 feet from the water line. The body was found covered by debris, near an area where evidence had previously been discovered.
Chelsea King was reported missing by her family late Thursday February 25th after she did not return home from a run in the north Rancho Bernardo area. An extensive search was launched throughout the area over the past five days. Thousands of volunteers and law enforcement personnel participated in the search with hopes of finding Chelsea alive.
On Sunday February 28 a registered sex offender, John Albert Gardner III, was arrested in connection with the disappearance of 17-year-old Chelsea King.
Sheriff Gore anticipates positive identification of the remains to be made late today or tomorrow.
