17 faculty join arts, sciences academy


Seventeen professors from seven University of California campuses have been named 2012 fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The 2012 class of 220 new members was announced today (April 17).


They include, by campus:



UC Berkeley


  • James M. Berger, professor of biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology

  • Bernard Sadoulet, professor of physics

  • Eli Yablonovitch, professor of electrical engineering

  • Peidong Yang, professor of chemistry, materials science and engineering


UC Davis


  • Maureen L. Stanton, professor of evolution and ecology


UC Irvine


  • Steven A. Frank, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology

  • Vicki L. Ruiz, dean, School of Humanities; professor of history and Chicano/Latino studies


UCLA


  • Russel E. Caflisch, professor of mathematics; director, Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics

  • James A. Lake, Distinguished Professor of molecular, cell and developmental biology and human genetics

  • Thomas Milton Liggett, professor emeritus of mathematics

  • Michael A. North, professor of English

  • Judea Pearl, professor emeritus of computer science

  • Larry Simpson, professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics


UC San Diego


  • Susan Ferro-Novick, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator; professor of cellular and molecular medicine, UC San Diego School of Medicine

  • Herbert Levine, professor of physics; co-director, Center for Theoretical Biological Physics


UC Santa Barbara


  • Edward J. Kramer, professor of materials science 


UC Santa Cruz


  • A. Peter Young, Distinguished Professor of physics
