Christmas just isn’t the same when you have to lay off your brother-in-law,” said Mark Andol, “It’s hard to lay off family and hard workers that want and deserve that job.
In the small town of Elma, New York, sits the one-of-a-kind store that has been catching a lot of attention. The Made In America Store has been making news in all kinds of media for their innovative thinking and ideas when it comes to manufacturing and selling products. Everything in the store is 100% American made, even the packaging of each item is 100% made in the USA. With only a 20 minute drive from Buffalo, New York, it’s one of the hottest growing destinations with tourists, so much that they just hosted their 100th tour bus!
The Made In America Store first broke news when a welding and fabricating plant owner, Mark Andol, decided to open a store that strictly sells 100% made in the USA products. The move to open such a store came after Andol lost a contract to another business that could do the entire job with Chinese steel at prices that were lower than cost price for Andol. The multi-million dollar contract that Andol had lost forced him to lay off more than a third of his workforce at General Welding & Fabricating, including some family members.
“Christmas just isn’t the same when you have to lay off your brother-in-law,” said Mark Andol, “It’s hard to lay off family and hard workers that want and deserve that job.”
When the Made In America Store initially opened, there were only 50 products available. People from all over Western New York came to see the store, to see what it was all about. A lot of different people came to see the store, to see what America still made, but majority of the people came to thank Mark Andol for what he was doing.
Mark Andol took his patriotism one step further with his Made In America Store; he offers every active duty military personnel and veteran a discount on their entire purchase, every day. All of this pride in the red, white and blue has brought people from all over, so much that even tour buses of people started to show up.
At first, it was smaller groups of people coming to see the store. The smaller interest groups started to turn into bigger tour buses as part of a Western New York tour. It then grew into a bigger destination, where the main focus of the tour was America.
Even with all the media buzz, military discounts, tour buses and an all-American made inventory, people agreed on one change to the store; get more USA made products.
Since the opening of the Made In America Store in April of 2010, products have expanded from 50 to over 3,500 with over 300 different vendors! The inventory has been growing with the customers that come to the store, and with every request, a note goes into a book of items the Made In America Store will be researching. The constant growth and the 100% America promise has kept people interested and the word of the Made In America Store is getting out.
The 100th bus group originated in San Diego, California, all the way from the west coast and finally made its way to the Made In America Store. The trip was planned as a Mystery Tour, where the tenants of the trip didn’t know where they were headed. Each tour bus planned through the Made In America Store receive a brief introduction from the store owner, Mark Andol, and are giving a light treat. Each participant receives a handheld American flag on their way out!
