Avenue Q, the smash-hit Broadway musical about real life in New York City, as told by a cast of people and puppets, will return to San Diego Civic Theatre, performing Tuesday July 6 through Sunday July 11, 2010.  Tickets go on sale to the general public on Sunday May 16 at 10AM.

“We are delighted to be able to secure the return to San Diego of this iconoclastic, quirky, Tony Award winning musical that dares to parody just about everything and everyone – while paying tribute to some of our most cherished icons,” Willcox added. “This show is funny, poignant, tongue-in-cheek and truthful.  Avenue Q is everything intelligent theatre should be, and we think that San Diego audiences will again be just as taken with it as we are.”

Avenue Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone’s looking for the same things he is: a decent job, a stable relationship, and a “purpose.” Eventually, Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that “the real world” isn’t so bad, after all!

The New York Times hailed Avenue Q as “a breakthrough musical of a very different stripe. Savvy, sassy and delicious!” and Entertainment Weekly claimed it was “one of the funniest shows you’re ever likely to see!”

Avenue Q features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; and is directed by Jason Moore; puppet design by Rick Lyon, orchestrations by Stephen Oremus, choreography by Ken Roberson, scenic design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Lew Mead; associate director is Evan Ensign and music supervisor is Andrew Graham.  Avenue Q is produced by Work Light Productions.

Individual tickets will go on sale on Sunday, May 16 at 10am on the Broadway San Diego website; in person at the Civic Theatre Ticket Office (3rd & B Street, downtown San Diego); or by calling the Ticket Office at (619) 570-1100 or Ticketmaster at (800) 982-2787.

Tickets prices range from $18–$76.

Due to adult situations (like full-puppet nudity, foul language, and adult themes), Avenue Q may be inappropriate for kids under 13.

Avenue Q replaces The 101 Dalmatians Musical in the Broadway/San Diego 2009-2010 Season – originally scheduled to play the San Diego Civic Theatre June 1 – 6.
