Arrests Made in “Sun Hat and the Smurf” Bank Robbery Series
San Diego Police Department Robbery Unit detectives have arrested two suspects in a series of bank robberies that began on Monday, May 10, 2010.
On May 10, 2010, a female robbed (or attempted to rob) three banks on the same day. The banks were located in Mission Valley, College Grove, and the City of La Mesa. In each case, the suspect was described as a white female, 20s, 5’8”, heavy build, with long blond hair and wearing a large sun hat.
On May 13, 2010, a fourth bank robbery took place in the City of La Mesa. The suspect in this case was described as a black male, 20s, wearing a “NY” baseball hat. The suspect was accompanied by the female wearing the sun hat three days earlier. On May 15, 2010, a fifth robbery occurred in the Liberty Station neighborhood. The suspect was described as a black male, wearing the same clothing as the suspect in case #4. On May 26, 2010, a black male (matching the description of the suspect in cases 4 and 5) robbed a bank in the City of Oceanside.
San Diego Police Department Sergeant Michael Gordon viewed surveillance photos and recognized the male suspect as Kevin High, an individual he had previously arrested. Additional investigation produced probable cause to arrest High for the robberies. A Crime Stoppers tip identified the female suspect as Victoria Wilkerson. The SDPD Crime Lab examined physical evidence at the May 10th robberies and linked it to Wilkerson.
Kevin High was arrested on June 1, 2010, and Victoria Wilkerson was arrested on June 9, 2010. High has been charged with multiple counts of robbery. Wilkerson will be arraigned tomorrow.
