Mayor Appoints Cushman as Special Assistant on Convention Center Expansion
Mayor Jerry Sanders has named Stephen P. Cushman as Special Assistant to the Mayor on the San Diego Convention Center expansion.
Cushman, who co-chaired the Citizen’s Task Force on the Convention Center Expansion, will provide key guidance to the Mayor’s Office on all aspects of the proposed 200,000-square-foot expansion, including project financing; securing approval from the San Diego City Council, the San Diego Unified Port District and the California Coastal Commission; and project-related negotiations. The position is voluntary and expected to last for the duration of the project- approval process.
A fourth-generation San Diegan, Cushman has represented the city as a Port Commissioner since 1999 and served as chairman of the board of the San Diego Convention Center Corp. He has served on more than 60 boards and commissions, including the executive committee of the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau; the Host Committee for Super Bowl XXXVII; the board of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce; the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Committee; and dozens of other community and business organizations.
“Steve has a solid record of public service and has vast experience with the stakeholders of the convention center expansion project,” said Sanders. “The expertise he brings to this role will help us navigate this process and result in a great project for San Diego.”
