Ramona Airport Holds Open House Sept. 18

Vintage WW II fighter planes, experimental aircraft, firefighting air tankers, helicopters, a “Tricked-out Big Rig Truck Show” and more will be on display Sept. 18 at Ramona Airport’s annual Open House.

The event, which is free to the public, will also feature tours of the airport’s traffic control tower, the Classic Rotors Helicopter Museum, the U.S. Forest Service’s Helitac Base and CAL FIRE Air Attack Base; a crafts fair and children’s games promoting fire and forest safety. Smokey Bear, a perennial favorite of the children, will also be on hand. Parking is free. Food, including a pancake breakfast and Mexican-food lunch, will be available for a nominal fee.

“This is always a great family event,” Bo Donovan, airport manager. “It’s also a great way for us to let the public see what a great asset our airport is.”

Ramona Airport, one of the County’s eight community airports, also serves as the joint firefighting air attack base of CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forest Service. CAL FIRE started flying fire missions out of the airport in 1957, making it the state fire agency’s oldest air attack base.

This year’s open house will again include a “Tricked-out Big Rig Truck Show,” which will feature more than 30 customized new and vintage trucks, including Peterbilts, Kenworths, Freightliners and others. The airport’s flight schools and businesses will also be open to the public at the event.

The Ramona Airport’s annual Open House is September 18, 2010 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Ramona Airport is located at 2926 Montecito Rd, Ramona, 92065. (Google Map).
