San Diego Police Department Southern Division detectives are asking for assistance from the public regarding a case involving an attempt kidnapping at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
On Sunday, September 5, 2010, at 4:40 p.m., a mother and her daughter were approached by Paul Simone at the intersection of Camino de la Plaza and E. San Ysidro Boulevard while they waited to cross the street. Simone asked the mother what time it was and she answered. Simone grabbed the mother’s wrist, but she backed away from him. Simone then grabbed the arm of the 9-year-old daughter and yelled that she was his daughter.
The mother tightened her grip on her daughter in an effort to pull her away from Simone. He would not let go of the girl and tried to pull her away from the mother. The mother screamed for help and continued to hold onto her daughter. Two witnesses in nearby vehicles saw and heard the mother and tackled Simone to the ground. Simone would not release his grip on the girl, and the mother and daughter also fell to the ground. The citizens who intervened held Simone on the ground until the mother and daughter could get away.
Police located Simone a short distance away. Simone was arrested and booked into jail for attempt kidnapping.
Simone is a white male, 43 years old, and 5’11” weighing 230 lbs. He has blue eyes and blond hair that is balding on top. He has a light mustache. Simone’s photo is attached on page 2 of this release.
