Volunteers Needed to Cleanup Wetlands During Tijuana River Action Month

The County's Public Works recycling program will use a state grant to recycle tires cleared during the estuary cleanup.
By donating a few hours in October, local residents have a chance to help clean and restore one of San Diego County’s most important wetlands, protect the ocean and improve local roads in a green way—all at the same time.
The County of San Diego and WiLDCOAST, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting coastal ecosystems, are looking for volunteers to roll up their sleeves to help clean up the Tijuana River Valley estuary in four separate Saturday-morning events in October.
County Supervisor Greg Cox will present a proclamation to WiLDCOAST on October 12 and will declare October as Tijuana River Action Month. He will also participate in one of the upcoming clean up events on Oct. 23.
“WiLDCOAST is working hard to clean up and protect our natural resources and I urge all San Diegans to come out and pitch in,” Cox said.
The estuary is home to several federally protected birds and threatened habitat including costal sage scrub and chaparral. But it’s also a place where winter rains flow strong enough each year to carry thousands of used tires and tons of trash from upstream.
This year, the County Department of Public Works recycling program is using a state grant to recycle the tires that will be cleared from the estuary during Tijuana River Action Month. Instead of being carried to sea, the tires will be shredded and re-used to pave local roads.
The four wetlands clean-up events are scheduled in different parts of the Tijuana River Valley estuary:
- Oct. 2: 9 a.m. to noon at Effie May Trail, 2310 Hollister St. San Diego.
- Oct. 9: 9 a.m. to noon at Border Field State Park, Willow Basin (Meet at the park’s main entrance, 1500 Monument Road.)
- Oct. 16: 8 a.m. to noon at Canon de los Laureles and Alamar Creek, Tijuana, Mexico.
- Oct. 23: 9 a.m. to noon, West of Dairy Mart Road Bridge, San Ysidro, Ca.
