Sewage Spill Prompts Closure at Carlsbad Beach

beach-closed-no-swimming sewage spillAn estimated 5,000 gallon sewage spill occurred Thursday October 7, 2010 from a main at 6200 Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad. The cause of the spill was a collapsing trunk line. The spill started 10:53 am and is ongoing. Crews from Encina Wastewater are fixing the line and attempting to contain the sewage by pumping it back to the treatment plant.

At this time it is undetermined how much has reached Encina Creek. Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted at Carlsbad State Beach access points from 1,000 feet north and south of Encina Creek Outlet. The water contact closure will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
