Is positive psychology effective in healing post combat veterans challenged with PTSD and TBI? According to Lisa Cypers Kamen, Happiness Expert, Wellbeing Post Combat Specialist, and Director of 501 (c) (3) nonprofit Harvesting Happiness for Heroes, the 25% success rate of the HH4Heroes veteran wellbeing work speaks for itself. HH4Heroes’ unique positive psychology curriculum reflects an overall increase in sustained personal happiness and reintegration management for veterans, and will serve as the focus of her keynote address at the upcoming UNSEEN WOUND Armed Forces Day event and “friend raiser”, on May 19th at San Diego’s Liberty Station on Historic Decatur Road. HH4Heroes’ presence at the UNSEEN WOUND’s event is especially significant in raising local awareness for what the Voice of San Diego states is home to 28,666 veterans, making the city home to one of the largest population of veterans that have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan war alone.

Sharing the stage with fellow keynote speakers, Rick Collins, Founder of the UNSEEN WOUND and Colonel David Sutherland, Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Warrior and Family Support, Kamen will present the HH4Heroes.org solutions based mission in post combat wellbeing to military families, spouses, caretakers, families of the fallen and veteran attendees at the public event. HH4Heroes and the UNSEEN WOUND hope to raise public awareness for treatment needs of veterans challenged with the invisible effects of PTSD and TBI such as; depression, substance abuse, communication deficiency, anger management, difficulty maintaining relationships, sustained wellbeing health, suicide, deficient parenting, joblessness and homelessness.

Appearing on San Diego’s CBS8 on Wednesday, May 16th raising awareness for the event, Kamen stated, “We all have the tools and resources for our healing, sometimes we just need coaching to get through it. Combat trauma is a very normal part of returning home from war, and there are things that we can do in a positive way to help reintegrate and successfully readapt warrior skills to civilian society.” Unique to HH4Heroes, is the organization’s curriculum which expands the reach and effectiveness of the individual post combat veteran needs, to address the entire circle of caregivers and support outlets that encompass the veteran upon his/her return home.

San Diego Unified offers multiple programs that provide students with breakfast to ensure they are fueled and ready to learn each day.

At 53 elementary schools, breakfast is served to almost 30,000 students a day through the district’s Breakfast in the Classroom program. In fact, elementary schools have increased breakfast participation by 188 percent. Eight secondary schools also have breakfast alternative programs, including Breakfast in the Classroom and Nutrition Break. All other schools continue to offer regular breakfast in their cafeterias.

State Superintendent for Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently shared in a letter with district superintendents and school food service directors that research confirms the clear connection amongst health, learning, and attendance.

“Healthy children are more successful in school, miss fewer days of school, are more attentive and well behaved, and are more likely to graduate from high school and go to college,” the letter stated. Click here to read the letter.

All fifth grade students at Jones Elementary School recently participated in the school’s first I’m Going to College Day, with an all-day visit to the University of San Diego (USD) campus. The visit provided the students with an up close and personal view of a real college campus.

As an AVID school, college readiness is one of the foundational components at Jones Elementary. To be successful in a global society, AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness.

The day’s activities included a tour of the USD campus by college freshmen and attending a standard- based English and math class taught by two different USD professors. Students participated by explaining their thinking in the math class, and after learning about “free verse” poetry, students wrote and shared their individual poems.

At the end of the day, a “mock” graduation was held for the fifth-graders. The students received a certificate of completion and a commemorative hand shake by the Assistant Dean of Students, their teacher and the principal. It was inspirational to see the Jones students glow with a sense of pride and purpose as they succeeded in their first college campus experience.

Jones principal Rita Powell and fifth-grade teachers would like to thank USD Assistant Dean Pauline Berryman Powell from the College of Arts and Sciences, Vice President of Public Affairs Pamela Gray Payton, and Admissions Counselor Lisa Saldias for transforming the vision of post-secondary education into a reality and inspiring the students to think beyond high school.

SAN DIEGO – Each year, more than 10 million girls under the age of 18 marry, usually under force of local tradition and social custom. Almost half of these compulsory marriages occur in South Asia. A new study suggests that more than two decades of effort to eliminate the practice has produced mixed results.

Writing in today’s (May 16) issue of Journal of the American Medical Association, Anita Raj, professor of medicine in the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and colleagues, report that marriage rates for girls under the age of 14 in India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh – the South Asian countries with the highest historical rates – have significantly declined since 1991. Conversely, the rate among girls aged 16 and 17 continues largely unchanged or, in the case of Bangladesh, has increased 36 percent.

SAN DIEGO – A team of University of California, San Diego researchers has made new discoveries about a copper-transporting protein in the membranes of human cells that drug-discovery scientists can co-opt for the development of new anti-cancer drugs.

The findings, published May 9 as an online-first paper in Cell Biochemistry and Biophysics, describe how the copper transporter works as a biochemical pump to seize copper atoms outside of a cell and whisks the atoms through the otherwise impervious cell membrane into the cell cytoplasm. The same pump transports the platinum-containing drug cisplatin into cancer cells to help kill them. Igor Tsigelny, a research scientist at the university’s San Diego Supercomputer Center and Department of Neurosciences, is lead author of the paper.

SAN DIEGO – Biologists at the University of California, San Diego, have succeeded in engineering algae to produce potential candidates for a vaccine that would prevent transmission of the parasite that causes malaria, an achievement that could pave the way for the development of an inexpensive way to protect billions of people from one of the world’s most prevalent and debilitating diseases. Initial proof-of-principle experiments suggest that such a vaccine could prevent malaria transmission.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by infection with protozoan parasites from the genus Plasmodium. It affects more than 225 million people worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions, resulting in fever, headaches and in severe cases coma and death. While a variety of often costly antimalarial medications are available to travelers in those regions to protect against infections, a vaccine offering a high level of protection from the disease does not yet exist.

ImageWare Systems, Inc. ( PINKSHEETS : IWSY), a leader in multimodal biometric security solutions, has released version 2.0 of its Biometric Engine (BE), an evolutionary leap in physical security identification at airports, seaports and other critical points-of-access for both government and private enterprises. This new version will join and enhance the suite of server-based products targeted at the secure identification markets.

BE 2.0 marks an inflection point in the execution of ImageWare’s business plan, as the release rolls out the new version to major government clients like Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), operators of LAX, and the Veterans Administration, and offers a new entry point to the commercial sector, which is expected to benefit from enhanced identity authentication methods in the upgrade.

The release also addresses head-on the SAFE Port Act, which requires foreign shippers by 2013 to not only secure cargo being shipped to the U.S. but also securitize the identity of individuals loading their contents. In several instances, foreign governments are mandating the private sector to finance these security enhancements in order to expedite the implementation process.

Henry High School students Bryan Nguyen and Armando Narciso will participate in the World Global Junior Achievement Titan Challenge after placing second at the national competition in the virtual manufacturing simulation exercise.

The team, whose name is “Team 1%”, will travel to Delaware in early August to compete against teams from Russia, China, Canada and other parts of the United States.

As part of the competition, the team acted as corporate business leaders, making decisions that affected the profitability and sustainability of their virtual company in an attempt to outperform their competitors in profit, sales, and market share. They set prices, determined production levels, invested in capital, planned marketing and research, and developed budgets.

“I am excited about the competition,” Nguyen said. “Through this experience, I’ve found out that anything can happen, good or bad. If you can quickly assess and adapt to the situation, things can turn out alright.”

San Diego Unified School District has traditionally had at least four teams in the Junior Achievement Titan San Diego and regional competitions each year. Past participants have included students from various high schools, including Clairemont, Henry, Scripps Ranch and San Diego High.

For more information on Team 1%, contact Mark Abbott at mabbott@sandi.net. SAN DIEGO – For the first time, researchers at the University of California, San Diego have peered inside a living mouse cell and mapped the processes that power the celebrated health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. More profoundly, they say their findings suggest it may be possible to manipulate these processes to short-circuit inflammation before it begins, or at least help to resolve inflammation before it becomes detrimental.

The work is published in Monday’s (May 14) online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
