American Red Cross Hosts the 2010 Lifeguard Games


red-cross-lifeguard-games City of Coronado Aquatics CenterThe American Red Cross will host the annual summer Lifeguard Games on August 1, 2010 at the City of Coronado Aquatics Center located at 1845 Strand Way, Coronado, California.

Lifeguard teams from San Diego and the Imperial Counties will participate in a series of group and individual events such as the submerged victim towing, active victim rescues, 50-yard crawl swim with rescue tube, 10-pound brick carry, and several new fun and exciting events. (more…)

Solana Beach and Encinitas Libraries Host Blood Drives


The Solana Beach and Encinitas branches of San Diego County Library are hosting blood drives this summer to help out local San Diego residents in need. The libraries are teaming up with the Red Cross to offer the drives which will take place at the Solana Beach branch, located at 157 Stevens Ave, Solana Beach, CA 92075 on June 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Encinitas branch, located at 540 Cornish Dr, Encinitas, CA 92024 on July 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (more…)

American Red Cross Survey Finds More than Two-thirds of Americans Experience a Summer Emergency


cpr-training Red Cross research americans experience summer emergencyA new Red Cross survey shows one in every four people report that they have been in a situation where someone needed CPR.  The same study showed that 68 percent of Americans have been involved in some kind of summer emergency ranging from insect bites, heat stroke and broken bones to more life-threatening situations.

The study, based on a survey of more than 1,000 adults, also found that Americans say they are most comfortable giving CPR to family members, friends and coworkers. The survey also reported that less than half of the respondents were very likely to perform CPR on a stranger. The survey also showed that physical appearance was a significant factor when people are deciding to perform CPR on a stranger. Men with a disheveled or sloppy appearance were the least likely to receive assistance, with only half of respondents saying they would very likely try to give them CPR. (more…)

San Diego/Imperial Counties American Red Cross Assisting Those Affected By Earthquake


On Sunday, April 04, 2010, Southern California experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2. The earthquake was felt all across Southern California including San Diego County and the Imperial counties. The region continues to experience aftershocks.

Red Cross disaster specialists in the Imperial Counties region are assessing the damage caused by the earthquake and continue to monitor the situation.

In Calexico, over 100 senior citizens have been vacated from their residences and have been relocated to a safe area. The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter is on site providing food, water and other much needed supplies. The Red Cross is currently making arrangements to open a shelter for those affected by the disaster. (more…)

As the weather warms up and the sun is out longer, it reminds us that summer is near and for the many students in San Diego, that means a break from classes and more free time.   What better way to spend the summer than by giving back to the community while gaining valuable work experience to make your resume stand out from the crowd?

The American Red Cross is one of the world’s most renowned humanitarian organizations and it relies on volunteers to help with the mission of providing care and comfort to those affected by disaster.  The Red Cross is not a government agency, and relies on community donations of time and money to do its work. No matter what your experience or expertise, YOU have skills the Red Cross can use to help people in need.

American Red Cross’ 19th Annual CPR Saturday Returns This Weekend


On Saturday, March 13, 2010, San Diego American Red Cross will host its 19th Annual CPR Saturday. The event takes place at the Golden Hall at the San Diego Concourse, 202 C Street at B Street and 3rd Avenue

CPR Saturday is designed to teach San Diegans the life saving measures of CPR. The training is free and participants who successfully complete the training will receive a CPR certification. Also featured at the event will be a Children’s Learning Area for ages 5 to 11.

Sessions begin at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.  Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your desired session start time.

There is no advance registration required for this event!  Simply come to the class you intend to take and registration will take place then (arriving half an hour early is strongly recommended).

This year’s CPR Saturday program will include:

* Free Adult CPR training and certification for all ages
* Safety training, fun and games for children ages 5 to 11
* An American Red Cross blood drive

About the Children’s Area: This event will include training sessions for children ages 5-11. Children can participate in Basic Aid Training (basic first aid & safety information) and Whales Tales (how to be safe in, on and around the water).

Please note:

* Wear comfortable clothing
* Children ages 5-11 can participate in the Children’s Area while their parents are being trained. Otherwise, childcare is not provided.
* No cost for training, but donations are accepted
* Blood Drive on-site
* Check in at least 30 minutes prior to session
* Each session is about 3-1/2 hours long
* Easily accessible by mass transit
* Limited reduced rate parking available
